Die Katze gehört zu den beliebtesten Tieren im alten Ägypten. Einerseits war sie als kämpferische Jägerin der vielen Mäuse, der Schädlinge der Getreidespeicher geschätzt, andererseits zeichnete sie sich durch ihre Fürsorge für ihre Jungen aus. Diese Eigenschaften - Aggression gegen die Feinde Ägyptens und Sanftmut gegenüber dem ägyptischen Volk - schrieb man der Göttin Bastet zu und drückte sie in zahlreichen Katzendarstellungen aus.

The cat is one of the most popular animals in ancient Egypt. On the one hand she was valued as a combative hunter of the many mice, the pests of the granaries, otherwise she was characterized by her care for her young. These characteristics - aggression against the enemies of Egypt and gentleness towards the Egyptian people - were attributed to the goddess Bastet and expressed in numerous cat representations.


Die Haltung der sitzenden Katze zeigt sowohl gespannte Erwartung, als auch eine in sich ruhende Gelassenheit. Der breite Halskragen mit dem Udjat-Auge und der auf dem Kopf eingravierte Skarabäus weisen auf ihre Verbindung zum Sonnengott Re hin, dessen Tochter und auch Beschützerin sie ist.

The posture of the seated cat shows both tense expectation and a calm serenity. The wide necklace with the Udjat eye and the scarab engraved on the head indicate her connection to the sun god Re, whose daughter and protector she is.
